South Staffordshire Plc held its third health and safety conference last week at Six Ways Stadium in Worcestershire.

The conference brought together leaders from across the Group to launch a new ‘Staying Safe Together’ health, safety and wellbeing strategy. The event, which took place on 3 July, was led by Group Head of Health and Safety, Richard Brookes, who was joined by Group CEO, Charley Maher, Group Chief Financial Officer Rob O’Malley, and guest speaker, Al Peasland, Head of Technical Innovation Partnerships at Williams Racing.

As part of the conference, several colleagues were presented with awards in a ceremony that celebrated outstanding contributions to health and safety in the workplace.

Colleagues from OnSite Pipelines and Civil Engineering were delighted to win the Best Proactive Investigation Award for their work investigating the usage of pipe coil trailers and the safety measures in place that control the stored energy within the pipe as it’s dispensed from the trailer.

From start to finish they worked closely with operations colleagues to carry out a successful proactive investigation which included a trial of different innovations.

The team has since implemented a new device which absorbs all the retained energy in the pipes. It prevents them from bouncing and whipping as they leave the trailer, which has a high potential to cause harm. The pipe passes through a set of rollers that dissipate the energy and consequently makes it easier to manage the pipe into the trench.

Health and safety manager, Nick Littlecott, commented: “Winning the award shows that trust and collaboration between health and safety and operations really can achieve lasting solutions.”

Director of Operations, Ady Brown, commented: “OnSite considers health, safety and the wellbeing of all our staff, and anyone else who could be impacted by our works, our number one strategic objective and part of our mission, vision and values. Where there is an opportunity to reduce the potential of harm, OnSite will always lead. The pipe coil trailer not only reduces stored energy, but it is also the right item of equipment to use in the industry for dispensing pipe.”
