This week is National Apprenticeship Week, an opportunity for us to celebrate and recognise the positive impact apprenticeships have on businesses and individuals. Apprenticeships are a great way to bring people into the industry and offer them the chance to build a career for life. Apprenticeships combine real work with training and study towards a qualification. The knowledge learned is put straight into practice whilst earning a salary.

We have several colleagues at OnSite who have their own experiences of apprenticeships. Click on a case study below to find out more.

Cameron Maxwell

My brother works for South Staffordshire Plc and I had heard good things. I saw the advert for the water network operative apprenticeship on the Gov website and decided to apply. I had never done anything like this before. I did a year at Walsall College studying a sports course and went straight into the apprenticeship from there. It was totally different, but I just wanted a change. I expected the apprenticeship to be mainly classroom-based but it was more hands-on, which I preferred.

I have been an apprentice for five months. My dad is a manager for OnSite so when I left school, I wanted to follow in his footsteps. We saw that there were apprenticeships available, so I decided to apply. I was invited for an interview and was pleased when I passed through to the second interview stage. There were around 15-16 people there and eight got accepted onto the apprenticeship. I was one of them and it felt amazing! It felt like a big thing as I was one of the youngest there.

My dad works for South Staffordshire Water (SSW) and told me that an OnSite apprenticeship had become available, so I decided to apply. A typical day on-site involves re-laying new pipes and repairing leaks on customer’s properties. We also have classroom learning three times a month, studying modules such as traffic management, customer service and health and safety.

Muhammed Data, Recruitment Coordinator

I am a recruitment coordinator for OnSite and I see the apprenticeship recruitment process through from advert to offer. Apprenticeships are a great way to bring young people into the business and get them interested in the industry by showing them different areas of work and offering them the chance to build a career for life in the area that interests them.

Watida Makwarimba

I didn’t have expectations before I started my apprenticeship. I went into it with an open mind and stayed focused on what I needed to do. I’m a hands-on person and I like exploring, so I was very interested in the opportunity of working in different locations all over the West Midlands and the UK.
