Client: Scottish Water via Kelda Water Services

The headwall section of the main outfall for the Persley Waste Water Treatment Works, on the River Don in Scotland, had been largely washed away during storms when the site flooded.

Kelda Water Services were tasked with carrying out the headwall repairs and appointed ACG Civils. KWS is part of the Kelda Group – owner of Yorkshire Water, one of the UK’s leading water and waste water companies.

In order to carry out the repairs, the outfall, needed isolating from the main river. The River Don, is a flashy river therefore a suitably robust and reliable temporary dam was required.

Having already looked at alternative systems and without the confidence that the dams would be suitable, Project Engineer, Ben Coveney, contacted OnSite, suppliers of PortaDam. Ben wanted a system that offered the best chance of success in coping with a river where levels and flow volumes could fluctuate very quickly.

PortaDam has been widely used in Scotland’s fast flowing and flashy rivers and after an initial survey, OnSite installed a 25m PortaDam, around the outfall, capable of holding back up to a 2.5m water depth.

The PortaDam was in place for 6 weeks to facilitate the headwall repair works.

“Key for us was using a system that we could depend on. OnSite delivered an excellent service and the PortaDam was essential in completing the works on time. We will have no hesitation in using PortaDam for future temporary dam requirements”
