OnSite Central was called upon to carry out cleaning and inspection works on a surface water drainage culvert to enable the Canal & River Trust to carry out a man entry condition assessment survey. The culvert was located under a canal on private farmland which made the area difficult to access using traditional equipment, but the team were able to use OnSite’s 8×8 full wheel drive combination high pressure water jetting/suction unit with integral water recycling to safely access the site and complete the cleaning element of the works.
To prepare for the cleaning, the culvert was de-watered and over pumping from the outlet was established to re-direct the normal flow. A simple, temporary sandbag dam (400mm high x 2,000mm wide) was also constructed on the culvert inlet to ensure no release of waste during the works. The silt inside the culvert was tested to determine if it should be disposed of through a licensed waste disposal facility, before the team carried out High Pressure Water Jetting (HPWJ), removing and disposing of 75% volume of silt from the culvert.
Once the culvert had been de-watered and cleaned, the team completed a CCTV condition inspection survey before making ready for a man entry inspection by the client.
