Background
OnSite Rail was contracted by international infrastructure group, Balfour Beatty, on behalf of Network Rail, to undertake masonry repair works in Kidlington.
Balfour Beatty holds the minor works contract across the Western route for Network Rail and is one of the principal contractors delivering maintenance and infrastructure upgrades in this region. OnSite Rail has worked closely with Balfour Beatty for many years, providing specialist support on a range of civil and structural projects within the rail environment.
Scope of works
Balfour Beatty required specialist masonry repairs to re-case stonework on a railway bridge, primarily located in the barrel of the structure. Given the challenging location, access was restricted and required careful planning to ensure the safety and efficiency of the operation. The repairs also needed to be completed using like for like materials to maintain the listed structure’s heritage and appearance, while meeting Network Rail standards.
Approximately 30m2 of stonework was re-cased within the bridge arches, much of which was in areas that were difficult to get to. To safely access all sections, the team used a combination of PASMA® mobile access towers during midweek shifts and an off-track mobile elevating work platform, located on the haul road, for the Saturday night possessions.
All friable and damaged stone was carefully removed and replaced with new, like-for-like stone. Temporary works were installed using a series of steel brackets and timber supports to hold the new stonework securely in position while it set.
Rope access operatives from the Industrial Rope Access Trade Association were hired to clear vegetation from the embankment and install temporary access steps, enabling a safe route to the opposite side of the track. This approach eliminated the need for additional possessions, saving both time and resources.
Outcome
OnSite Rail was selected for this project because of its proven experience in delivering high quality masonry and structural repair works within operational rail environments.
The skilled team, including an expert stone and brick layer, used careful planning and effective co-ordination to complete the work safely, to specification and without issue, all while ensuring minimal disruption to the rail network.
The works delivered a durable, long-term solution that restored the structural integrity and visual quality of the bridge, improving safety and reducing the need for future maintenance. All re-cased stonework matched the existing structure in both appearance and material, preserving the bridge’s heritage character.
