Background
OnSite Rail was approached by BAM Nuttall, a civil engineering contractor, to carry out culvert cleaning and de-vegetation works in Little Stretton, following an incident of flooding.
In preparation for the works, a detailed plan and methodology was developed and submitted to BAM which was subsequently approved by the Environment Agency (EA). Following approval, the works were scheduled and planned for delivery.
Scope of works
The team undertook the desilting and cleaning of two culverts, along with de‑vegetation of the adjoining drainage ditch, in full compliance with EA standards.
Excessive silt build‑up within both culverts was causing backfall and flooding onto neighbouring land. To address this, OnSite installed sedi‑mats at each culvert outfall, ensuring they were cleaned and removed at the end of each shift.
Over 10 tonnes of silt was removed from the culverts, and CCTV surveys were conducted, during which it was established that refurbishment works were needed as the bottoms of the culverts had eroded.
The culverts were jetted, and all excess spoil was extracted down to invert level using a jet-vac unit before being removed from site and taken to a designated waste facility. The culvert walls were jetted clean to restore full flow capacity and water levels were lowered to help alleviate flooding.
The team cleared vegetation from the ditch between both culverts. Following this, they hand-dug the channel to a depth of approximately 300mm, creating a new invert level to allow free water flow between them. All arisings were collected and removed from site to ensure a clean and safe finish.
Outcome
The works were completed safely and efficiently in just four days, finishing two days ahead of the planned schedule. This is a perfect demonstration of OnSite Rail’s ability to manage complex projects with precision and care, whilst maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
BAM Nuttall expressed satisfaction with the high standard of work delivered and the early completion time.
